We are honored to announce that the New Mexico Public Health Association recently awarded its annual Public Health Advocate Award to Con Alma Health Foundation for consistent efforts to improve health and advance health equity in New Mexico.
“I am honored to accept this award on behalf of our incredible team of staff, members of our Board of Trustees and Community Advisory Committee as well as our partners who help us connect with people across New Mexico to identify, address and advocate on behalf of pressing public health needs in our state,” said Dolores E. Roybal, executive director of Con Alma Health Foundation.
Ron Hale, co-chair of the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils, wrote in his nomination letter about Con Alma’s approach of integrating philanthropy and inclusive advocacy to improve health in New Mexico, “Con Alma engages others in program initiatives and leverages resources to support community problem-solving, self-definition, self-determination and capacity building. It looks to culture, tradition and community for existing strengths and assets that can serve as solutions to community needs.”
Hale listed several of Con Alma’s innovative initiatives, including assessing the impact of the Affordable Care Act in New Mexico, leading a Healthy People, Healthy Places project that increased people’s access to healthy food and physical activity, and our long-term support of New Mexico’s county and tribal health councils and the New Mexico Alliance of Health Councils, which serves as a critical system for including community voices to improve health.
