With the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Con Alma Health Foundation (CAHF) partnered with four statewide and community based nonprofit organizations to explore the feasibility and public will to increase the dental workforce and possibly develop a mid-level oral health practitioner model in New Mexico. | The year-long initiative had the following key findings:1. Needs Assessment – New Mexico has a severe shortage of dental providers and significant oral health needs, particularly in its rural, geographically remote Hispanic/Latino and Native American communities.
2. Public Will – There is clear and favorable public will to act now on addressing the oral health gap and solve access and workforce problems.
3. There is uniform interest in New Mexico for a mid-level oral health practitioner model among health care consumers, especially in rural and low-income communities.
4. Rural communities are eager for economic development that can increase access and dental services and the economic opportunity and career path opportunities for their citizens.

I am starting a dental care practice which will meet the access to dental care for home bound individuals of all ages, ethnicity and regardless of their ability to pay for services in the Greater Albuquerque area at first and then expand to more rural communities. We will need grants and donations to buy the equipment necessary to deliver superior complete dental care in individual homes and care facilities.

Nizhoni Smiles, Inc., non-profit corporation was established to provide orthodontic and dental services on the Navajo Nation in 1992. The orthodontic program was founded in 1979 as the Navajo Orthodontic Program by the Navajo Nation and U.S. Indian Health Services. Nizhoni Smiles serves the public by striving to provide effortable dental/orthodontic services. Nizhoni Smiles currently operates at two locations on the Navajo Reservation at Shiprock, NM and at St. Michaels, Arizona near Window Rock, Arizona. The cost of operating the two facilities is borne entirely by NSI patient revenues. NSI does not receive any federal, state, or tribal funding or grants. How can we participant in this initiative?
